Man killed when brush fire swept through Lakewood mobile home park has been identified

One of two men who died in an Aug. 4 fire that began in a vacant lot and then swept into a Lakewood mobile home park has been identified.

The Pierce County Medical Examiner’s Office said Patrick Zmiarovich, 70, died from smoke inhalation and thermal injuries. His death was ruled as accidental.

Driven by dry, hot weather and breezy conditions, flames quickly jumped from a nearly 5-acre brush-filled lot into a row of mobile homes at Jamestown Estates.

By the time the fire was extinguished, nine homes had been destroyed, five were damaged and Zmiarovich and another younger man had died.

An investigation on the cause of the fire is continuing, both fire and city officials said Monday.
