Tacoma police officer shot Wednesday in area of city notorious for criminal activity

A Tacoma police officer was shot Wednesday, allegedly by two teenagers during a traffic stop on the city’s South End police reported.

Tacoma Police said the officer noticed a vehicle being driven erratically about 2:25 p.m. in the area of South 96th and South Alaska streets.

The vehicle’s occupants fled when contacted by police and fired shots at the officers, hitting a detective. A 27-year veteran of the force was struck in the shoulder. He was taken to a local hospital and was reported to be in stable condition with non-life-threatening injuries.

“He was up and talking,” police spokesperson Shelbie Boyd said Wednesday.

At 4:25 p.m., two juvenile boys, ages 14 and 15, were found and arrested after a search. Both were booked into Remann Hall on suspicion of attempted murder, according to police.

Boyd did not know whether the injured officer or any other officers fired their weapons during the incident.

The Hosmer corridor has been a magnet for criminal activity in recent years. The city and police have have been developing plans to address it.
