Heavy fire and smoke rages from Tacoma auto shop. People warned to stay away

A local auto parts business caught fire Wednesday afternoon, and there were signs that parts of the building might collapse.

Tacoma Fire Department spokesman Joe Meinecke said firefighters were called just before 2 p.m. about a fire in the 4800 block of South Adams Street. Heavy fire and smoke were coming out of In Motion Auto LLC. The business describes itself on its social media accounts as a “used auto parts shop focused on latest model European performance cars.”

There were signs the building might collapse, so crews were using a defensive strategy and fighting the fire from the outside, not the inside, Meinecke said.

Because the business is an auto shop, there might be chemicals in the smoke, Meinecke added, and people were advised to avoid the area.

The flames were brought under control about 4:15 p.m., the Fire Department reported on the social media platform X.
