Tacoma police have launched a death investigation after a body was found overnight by an area fire crew.

About 1 a.m., Tacoma firefighters were dispatched to the 2900 block of Upper Park Street after a report of a brush fire.

That area of Upper Park Street is just south of I-5 and across from the Tacoma Dome.

Once fire crews arrived on scene, they extinguished the blaze but then found a body in the debris.

The gender and age of the person who died was not immediately known.

The Pierce County Medical Examiner will have to determine that and the cause of death because the burns were too extensive, Tacoma police spokesman and detective William Muse said Sunday.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Tacoma/Pierce County Crime Stoppers at 800-222-8477.
