A wreck between a semi-trailer and motorcycle that reportedly triggered a fire and killed the rider closed a section of road in Puyallup early Sunday, according to Puyallup Police.

About 3 a.m., police and Central Pierce Fire and Rescue were dispatched to a semi-trailer fire in the 900 block of Valley Avenue Northwest, which is north of the Puyallup River.

The 34-year-old Pierce County man riding the motorcycle was reportedly driving at a “high rate of speed” and recklessly before he crashed into the truck, Captain Ryan Portmann said Sunday.

The man was pulled from the wreckage by a witness, but he later died, Portmann said. It was not immediately known if the man died at the scene or at an area hospital, he said.

After the wreck, the truck caught fire, followed by the trailer catching fire which then burned some power lines and knocked out power to the area, although it was expected to be restored soon, he said.

Investigators also ultimately closed a section of Valley Avenue between Seventh Street Northwest and Freeman Road.

The road reopened about 10:30 a.m., police announced.
