A man thought to be in his 30s died Saturday afternoon in a single-vehicle crash on a bridge that was recently closed to traffic, according to Tacoma police.

Police were dispatched to the Fishing Wars Memorial Bridge about 1 p.m., Officer Shelbie Boyd said.

Formerly called the Puyallup River Bridge, the Fishing Wars Memorial Bridge links Tacoma to the city of Fife to the east, connecting Puyallup Avenue to Pacific Highway, The News Tribune reported.

The Federal Highway Administration closed the bridge Oct. 20 because of safety concerns.

Officer Boyd said the male driver crashed into a barrier on the bridge — either a barrier that was already part of the structure or newly erected because of the recent closure.

The man died at the scene. Police were not pursuing the vehicle at the time of the crash, Boyd said.

Other details about the incident were not immediately available.
