Body recovered Saturday after fall from Point Defiance park cliffs, police say

A person thought to have fallen to their death at Point Defiance Park on Saturday was ultimately recovered by Tacoma fire crews, according to police.

About 1:55 p.m., police were dispatched to the 5600 block of Five Mile Drive — also described as the Gig Harbor viewpoint cliffs — after a report of a welfare check, Tacoma Officer Shelbie Boyd said.

The caller could see a body down below and asked police to check on the situation, she added.

Police responded in their marine services unit and confirmed they could see a body, but could not access it from the water.

The body wasn’t in the water, Boyd said.

Tacoma fire crews finally deployed a “high-angle rescue” to recover the body, she said.

Details about the person who died were not immediately available. The Pierce County Medical Examiner’s Office received the body at 9:10 p.m. Saturday, Boyd said.
