The city of Tacoma has partnered with several area service providers to expand the city’s winter homeless shelter capacity by a total 170 beds.

Starting Nov. 15, Tacoma Rescue Mission will be operating 50 shelter beds at Holy Rosary Church until the end of March 2024. Those wishing to access the beds should go to the main Rescue Mission campus.

When the weather forecast is 35 degrees with wind or rain, or 32 degrees and colder, the following locations will be open to provide shelter, with 120 more beds:

  • Tacoma Rescue Mission at Holy Rosary Church will have an additional 20 winter beds. (Address: 520 S. 30th St., Tacoma)

  • Catholic Community Services’ Nativity House will be providing an additional 80 overflow shelter beds. (Address: 702 S. 14th St., Tacoma)

  • Valeo Vocation will be providing 20 overflow beds for people 18-24 years old at the Beacon Young Adult Shelter. (Address: 415 S. 13th St., Tacoma)

Currently the city of Tacoma has 1,234 emergency and temporary shelter beds available throughout the system, said city communications contact Maria Lee.

The expanded capacity would increase the city’s bed count during the projected cold season to 1,284 from Nov. 15 through March 2024 and increase the bed count during inclement weather to 1,404 beds, Lee said.

The city is currently spending more than $500,000 in external contracts and supplies for additional winter weather shelter response, she said.
