A man who died on a Tacoma area bridge that was recently closed to traffic has been identified, according to the Pierce County Medical Examiner’s Office.

About 1 p.m. Oct. 28, Stacy Dockins, 48, drove onto the bridge and crashed into a barrier on the bridge — either a barrier that was already part of the structure or newly erected because of the recent closure, The News Tribune reported.

He died at the scene.

The man’s city of residence was not known. The cause of death was identified as smoke inhalation and thermal injury, and the manner of death an accident, according to the ME’s Office.

Formerly called the Puyallup River Bridge, the Fishing Wars Memorial Bridge links Tacoma to the city of Fife to the east, connecting Puyallup Avenue to Pacific Highway, The News Tribune reported.

The Federal Highway Administration closed the bridge Oct. 20 because of safety concerns.
