Pasco resident Susan Frank places a donation into a Red Kettle as Salvation Army bell ringer Consuelo Luna stands inside the entryway of a popular grocery store on Road 68 in west Pasco. Because of a shortage in volunteers, the local Salvation Army will have about 13 less donation stations than last year, according to Major Cristian Sibaja, the Salvation Army Tri-Cities commander.

It seems that there is a general consensus that the last two months of the year are known as the giving season, but have you ever wondered just how much is given to charity and which states give the most?

According to a new study conducted by personal finance website WalletHub, U.S. donors gave approximately $500 billion in donations in 2022, and nearly 61 million people volunteer each year, serving a combined total of 4.1 billion hours per year.

The WalletHub study also compared all 50 states in the country ranking them from the most charitable to the least charitable. The study listed Washington in the top 20 most charitable states.

Here’s which states topped the list and where exactly Washington ranked.

Which states are the most charitable?

The two main categories of the study used to determine the ranking of the most charitable states were volunteering and service, and charitable giving.

The top five most charitable states in America, according to the study, are:

1. Utah

2. Wyoming

3. Minnesota

4. Maryland

5. Maine

Where did Washington rank on the list of most charitable states?

The study ranked Washington as the 15th most charitable state in the country. The study also found that the Evergreen State was tied with Hawaii, Nebraska and South Dakota in fifth place for the state with the highest percentage of the population that donates their time.

The study also ranked Washington as the 14th richest and most charitable state.
