Study says WA state is home to best and worst cities for keeping New Year’s resolutions

For many people, a new year means a fresh start with new resolutions.

Setting new resolutions can be easy and exciting, but keeping those resolutions can be quite difficult. We can be hard on ourselves for not following through with our resolutions, but have you ever thought about how the city you live in could affect whether or not you follow through with your New Year’s resolution?

A new study conducted by personal finance website Wallethub compared 182 cities and identified the best and worst cities for keeping your New Year’s resolutions. The study listed four cities in Washington, one topped the list: Seattle.

Best cities for keeping your New Year’s resolutions

The study looked at 57 metrics that ranged from exercise opportunities to income growth to the employment outlook to determine the ranking of best and worst cities for keeping your New Year’s resolutions.

The top five best cities for keeping your New Year’s resolutions in America, according to the study, are:

  • Seattle, Washington

  • San Francisco, California

  • Scottsdale, Arizona

  • Irvine, California

  • San Diego, California

Why is Seattle the best place in America to keep your New Year’s resolution?

According to the study, Seattle is the best place for keeping your New Year’s resolutions if they are related to your physical and financial well-being. The Emerald City is known for its strong focus on a healthy, physically active lifestyle and its accessibility to fresh, local produce helps Seattleites maintain a healthy diet.

The study also says that due to Seattle’s “robust job market and thriving tech industry,” there is a low percentage of people who default on their debt payments.

The study also found that Seattle has the third-lowest percentage of adults who do not exercise, and the third-lowest percentage of adult smokers.

What other WA cities are best and worst for New Year’s resolutions?

Three other cities in Washington state were also ranked among the best and worst cities for keeping your New Year’s resolutions. Spokane was ranked in the top 70 cities while Vancouver and Tacoma ranked in the lower half of the list.

The three best cities for keeping your New Year’s resolutions in Washington are:

  • #69 - Spokane
  • #109 - Vancouver
  • #118 - Tacoma
