The Hylebos Bridge in Tacoma closed Friday due to the cold temperatures.

The drawbridge carries East 11th Street over the Hylebos Waterway in the Tacoma Tideflats. It is closed to vehicle traffic until further notice, according to a City of Tacoma media release.

Sub-freezing temperatures have caused the bridge’s centerlocks, which lock the deck in place to allow vehicle traffic to pass, to not engage. When the weather becomes colder, issues with operating the bridge can arise, said Maria Lee, spokeswoman for the City of Tacoma.

Public Works has instructed the lead bridge operator to leave the bridge deck upright for shipping traffic. Crews will test the centerlocks again when the weather warms above sub-freezing temperatures, Lee said.
