Point Defiance Park walker stabbed in apparent random attack

UPDATE 8:30 p.m.: Point Defiance Park will open on Sunday on its normal schedule, Metro Parks Tacoma announced.

Point Defiance Park shut its gates early Saturday after a woman walking on the park’s trails was stabbed, according to Tacoma police. The suspect is at large.

Department spokesperson Officer Shelbie Boyd said the attacker, an adult male, was unknown to the victim and fled the scene using the park’s trail system. A search using dogs was launched but the high volume of visitors to the park made a canine search impractical, she said.

Police responded to the scene near the park’s 5-Mile Drive just before 1 p.m. Someone near the woman called police.

The victim was transported to a local hospital and was reported to be in stable condition with non life-threatening injuries
