If you’re looking to find a loyal and loving companion to spend your days with, why not consider adopting a four-legged best friend?

The Humane Society for Tacoma and Pierce County is always looking to find homes for the dozens of animals that they house and look after.

Lauren Green, the marketing director of the HSTPC, said in an interview that the adoption event that they held earlier this month had a great turnout, with many pets finding their forever homes, but there are still many more pets that are looking.

If you’re on the fence about adopting a pet because you are unsure if a pet would suit your lifestyle, Green suggests fostering a pet to see if it is the right fit for you as it is a short-term commitment.

“If you’re not quite sure, not quite ready, I always push the angle of fostering so you can kind of learn a little bit more about an animal and if it’s not the right fit at that time, you’re still really helping that animal and you’re helping the shelter by creating kennel space that otherwise would have been occupied and you’re helping us learn more about that animal in a home setting, so that we can find them the perfect home,“ Green said.

Adopting a pet can be a tough transition, not only for you, but for the pet as well. The Humane Society offers pet care counseling for people that adopt a pet and need extra support transitioning their pet to their new home and lifestyle.

“Beyond meeting their basic needs of food, shelter, water and care, it important to give shelter animals space and most importantly just time time to adjust to their new environment, time to learn you and figure out your routine,” Green said. “It’s just going to take time and patience to to learn each other.”

To adopt a pet, first view the adoptable pets on The Humane Society website then fill out an adoption application before heading to the shelter in person.

If you’re interested in fostering a pet, fill out a short foster inquiry form on The Humane Society website.

What does adopting or fostering include?

According to the Humane Society for Tacoma and Pierce County website, each adoption includes the following:

  • Wellness examination from shelter staff

  • Spay or neuter surgery

  • Microchip with national registration

  • Initial vaccines

  • Pet care counseling

Additional adoption benefits include:

  • One free week of GoodPup dog training

  • An exclusive 20% off discount at participating MudBay stores

  • A VCA Healthy Start Certificate, which includes a complimentary veterinary health exam and 14-day follow-up care

For those interested in fostering, you’d only have to provide the pet with love while the shelter provides everything you need including food, toys, blankets, and medical care while the pet is in your care.
