First non-prescription birth control will be available in these Tacoma pharmacies soon

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the first over the counter birth control last July, and in just a few weeks, will be available at most major pharmacies nationwide.

Opill, which is produced by drug manufacturer Perrigo, is the first-ever daily birth control pill that does not require a prescription and has been FDA approved for all-ages. The oral contraceptive is 98% effective in preventing pregnancies if taken as directed, but does not protect against HIV/AIDs or other sexually transmitted diseases.

According to a press release from Perrigo, Opill was shipped to major retailers and pharmacies on March 4 and will be available in coming weeks.

Although Opill might not be available in-store just yet, according to the press release, it is available for pre-order from select online retailers and is available from purchase at Opill.com.

How much does Opill cost?

Perrigo’s suggested price for Opill is $19.99 for a one-month supply and $49.99 for a three-month supply.

Perrigo is also offering a 6-month supply for $89.99, but only at Opill.com.

Which Tacoma stores will carry Opill?

Opill will be available at Walgreens and CVS, according to Perrigo’s Senior Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer Sara Young.

While Walgreens and CVS won’t be the only two stores that will carry the pill, the company wouldn’t share the complete list of stores that plan to carry the pill. Young told McClatchy in an email through a spokesperson that the company “has been pleased with retailers’ response to the product.” Perrigo expects the pill to be in other retail pharmacies too.

The News Tribune was able to confirm through a spokesperson for Rite Aid that Opill will be available at all Rite Aid and Bartell Drugs stores starting the first week of April.
