Puget Sound Energy is asking to raise gas and electricity rates. Here’s what we know

Puget Sound Energy customers will pay more for natural gas and electricity if the state approves the utility’s rate increase request.

PSE recently asked the state Utilities and Transportation Commission to change its electric and natural gas rates. If approved, the new rates would go into effect May 1.

PSE provided samples of the rate increases.

A typical PSE customer who uses 800 kWh a month would see their electric bill rise from $109.13 per month to $113.24 per month. A PSE natural gas customer who uses 64 therms a month would see their monthly bill rise from $80.72 to $88.40.

Basic charges for both services would remain the same.

PSE said the rate changes are due to several causes. The most significant, according to PSE spokesperson Melanie Coon, is the utility’s Low Income Program which has seen a greater number of participants.

“This has caused the available amount of funding to decline at a faster rate than anticipated,” Coon said. “To ensure customer needs are met, we are seeking additional funding for the remainder of the program year.”
