This new gift shop, boutique business just opened on busy South Tacoma Way corridor

Specialty soaps, spices, pottery, cards and books adorned the walls and filled the tables of a new boutique and gift shop along South Tacoma Way as shoppers milled about Friday morning.

HIVE Company, 5436 South Tacoma Way, had its grand opening April 13. Owner Michele Jones said she had been operating a private events space out of the storefront for three years before deciding to close in the fall and reopen as a retail store in April.

Jones sells a mix of local and global artisan goods produced by small makers. Some of the products are her personal favorites and include jewelry, prints, pens, dish towels, chocolates and cocktail mixes. In the future Jones said she wants to offer customized gifts for birthdays or house-warming presents.

“I wanted people to have an experience here when they come in,” Jones said. “Treat yourself, treat your people. [It’s] a gift shop, but [I’m] trying to be super thoughtful and intentional about what I’m carrying.”

Prices range from a couple dollars to $120, with most items between $20-$30. You can shop online or in person.

Later this month HIVE Co. will be hosting its first workshop, a tea light dot painting class. Classes, vendor markets and pop-ups will happen regularly in the back of the store with an events calendar online. Jones said she wants to sell scholarships to workshops, for customers to help pay it forward and make the classes more accessible.

Hundreds of people attended last week’s grand opening and pop-up events, Jones said, and neighboring businesses have been supportive of her business.

Jones said she wants HIVE Co. to be a space for gathering and community, the shop’s name being a reference to a hive of activity.
