Over a dozen people were displaced following an apartment fire in Tacoma on Wednesday night.

Reports of the fire came in at about 7 p.m., and Tacoma firefighters arrived at the Westwood Square Apartments in the 8800 block of Pacific Avenue. Heavy smoke and fire was coming out of two units on the second floor of the two-story building, Tacoma Fire Department spokesman Joe Meinecke told the News Tribune on Thursday.

Two of the units where the fire originated were heavily damaged. The fire started on a balcony area between units Six additional apartments received some level of damage. Meinecke said that about 15 to 18 people were displaced. The American Red Cross was assisting with relocation efforts.

Two people were taken to a local hospital to get checked for injuries. They were in stable condition, he said.

Meinecke said that 36 firefighters were on the scene and the initial knockdown of the fire took 30 minutes.

The cause of the fire is being investigated.
