Multiple construction projects on Canyon Road East, a busy Pierce County road cutting through Summit and Fredrickson, will result in detours as crews widen the corridor and improve safety.

One project will expand Canyon Road East from about 84th Street East to 72nd Street East to accommodate five lanes with a two-way left-turn lane. Construction began last spring and is expected to be finished this spring.

There are plans to add more curbs, gutters and sidewalks there, in addition to more street lighting, storm drains and improvements to the traffic signal at 72nd Street East, according to a project overview on Pierce County’s website. A new traffic signal will be installed on 80th Street East.

On Monday a new detour will be in place as Canyon Road between 72nd Street East and Pioneer will be closed while crews rebuild the north leg of the intersection and regrade the road to make it more smooth.

The project’s construction costs are about $7.65 million and is funded with Washington State Transportation Improvement Board Urban Arterial Program funds, federal Surface Transportation Program funds and local Traffic Impact Fees, according to Pierce County.

Wider streets coming to this area too

Another plan will widen and extend Canyon Road East from 208th Street East to 200th Street East with one lane in each direction and a two-way left-turn lane.

In April 2024 the east leg of 200th Street East and Canyon Road East in Fredrickson, Wash. will be closed until mid-July, with a new detour in place.

Crews will add curb, gutter and sidewalk to the west side, add a traffic signal at the intersection of 208th Street East, add street lighting and modify the existing traffic signal at the 200th Street East intersection, according to a project overview on Pierce County’s website.

The east leg of 200th Street East and Canyon Road East will be closed until mid-July, with a detour in place. There will also be a detour up for a road closure on 200th Street East between 53rd Avenue East and 50th Avenue East.

This project will cost about $11.2 million, with $9.2 million coming from the county’s real estate excise tax and $2 million from the state urban arterial program, according to Pierce County.
