If you’re looking to get outside as the weather warms up, Washington has plenty of state parks to choose from for outdoor recreation and camping. But before you plan your summer trip to a state park, keep in mind that some of them will be closed for construction. Here’s the full list of state parks expected to close at some point this summer.

Full closures

  • Kopachuck State Park, located just west of Gig Harbor will be closed beginning June 3 as the state builds new roads and buildings in the park’s upper day-use section. Construction is expected to last until the summer of 2025.

  • Roughly 40 miles west of Olympia, Lake Sylvia State Park will close June 10 as the park entrance is replaced. Currently, a culvert runs underneath the road entering the park, but the park’s department is replacing it with a bridge. The project is expected to last until the end of September.

Partial WA state park closures

  • The state closed the cabins and lower restrooms at Cama Beach State Park in late February due to a septic system failure. While the rest of the park will remain open, the repairs are expected to last through the end of 2024, and potentially into next year.

  • Repairs to the Centennial State Park Trail along the Spokane River mean the first 14 miles of the trail will be closed until early September. The other 26 miles of the trail will remain open while the first part of the trail gets a new layer of asphalt.

  • Sunset Beach at Lake Sammamish State Park closed in May of 2023 to add ADA-accessible trails, an event space and new picnic shelters. The parks department hasn’t specified when it will reopen, although it’s expected to be sometime this year.

  • Cape Disappointment camping will be closed at the park starting in mid-September. The repairs are expected to last until March of 2025.

  • While the closure isn’t listed on the State Parks website, a department spokesperson said in an email that Seaquest State Park near Mount St. Helens is expected to undergo infrastructure repairs in the late summer. The park’s campgrounds are expected to close between mid-September and mid-October.
