Five people were injured in a two-vehicle crash Saturday morning during the Gig Harbor Maritime Parade, Gig Harbor Fire and Medic One announced in a social media post.

About 11:45 a.m., fire crews responded to the wreck, which was toward the end of the parade route at Harborview Drive and Rosedale Street, said Gig Harbor Fire spokeswoman Tina Curran on Sunday.

The incident involved a van, a truck hauling a flatbed trailer and three people walking between the two holding a banner, she said.

Curran said the van unexpectedly lurched forward and crashed into the people holding the banner and then hit the trailer.

Fire officials said in their post that five people were injured, with three of them suffering moderate injuries and two with minor injuries. Four of the injured were taken to area hospitals for evaluation and treatment.

All of them were adults, Curran said.

“Since the crash occurred only feet from first responders, a joint effort with Gig Harbor Police ensued immediately,” fire officials said in their post. “Using the incident command system, a medical group was established to quickly evaluate the injured.”
