Juneteenth is Wednesday. Here’s what will be opened and closed in Tacoma, Washington

Wednesday is Juneteenth, the newest federal holiday that commemorates the day in 1865 when the last enslaved people in the United States were made aware of their freedom under the Emancipation Proclamation.

As such, all federal agencies and most state and local government offices will be closed Wednesday. All Tacoma Public Library branches will be closed, as well as all Pierce County Library System branches.

Mail delivery through the U.S. Postal Service will not happen Wednesday, although Amazon, FedEx and UPS will continue delivering packages. Post offices will be closed.

The Federal Reserve Bank is observing Juneteenth, so most banks will be closed. Check before you head out.

Within city of Tacoma limits, garbage pickup will be per usual, city spokesperson Linda Robson told The News Tribune.

There will also be no parking enforcement by Tacoma city staff, according to a news release.

Some Tacoma community centers will have amended hours, including the Eastside Community Center, STAR Center, People’s Center and Center at Norpoint. The Tacoma Nature Center, W.W. Seymour Conservatory and the Metro Parks administrative offices will be closed, according to Metro Parks Tacoma.

Fort Nisqually Living History Museum, Point Defiance Marina, Meadow Park Golf Course, Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium and the Northwest Trek Wildlife Park are open regular hours.
