Fireworks fans can soon get their fix at the annual Summer Blast event in Tacoma this Fourth of July.

Metro Parks announced Monday that the South Sound’s largest free Independence Day celebration, hosted alongside the city of Tacoma, will return at noon on Thursday, July 4.

There will be two Summer Blast locations: Dune Peninsula at Point Defiance Park, 5361 Yacht Club Road, and Cummings Park, 3939 Ruston Way. Live music can be viewed from two stages, and attendees can swing by beer gardens, food trucks and vendors.

In a news release, Andrea Smith, president of the park board, called the Tacoma celebration “a highlight of summer,” adding, “Metro Parks is proud to host our neighbors and friends for a day of fun and entertainment.”

Mayor Victoria Woodards also touted the event.

“Tacoma’s 4th of July Summer Blast is a cherished tradition that brings our community together in celebration of our nation’s independence,” Woodards said in the release. “I’m thrilled to join Metro Parks Tacoma for this wonderful event, which is the perfect opportunity for families and friends to come together and create lasting memories.”

What else can I see at Summer Blast?

Families can enjoy a “Kids Zone” at Cummings Park. There they’ll find an inflatable obstacle course, basketball, bounce house, crafts, karaoke and more, according to Metro Parks.

Overstimulated attendees can take a break from the festivities at a designated “quiet area”: a calming tent with cushions, tables and chairs. Earplugs and headphones will be available to check out.

What about July 4 fireworks in Tacoma?

Revelers can catch an eye-grabbing fireworks display over Commencement Bay at around 10 p.m. The fireworks can be viewed along Ruston Way, and the show is sponsored by Emerald Queen Casino & Hotel in tandem with the city and parks department, according to Metro Parks.

But be warned: Setting off your own fireworks in the city is illegal and can lead to injury, Metro Parks noted in the news release. It’s best to leave the sky-booms to the Summer Blast professionals.
