Just as the summer arrives in Tacoma this weekend, a popular local sprayground is going to be off limits.

Metro Parks announced in a Tuesday afternoon news release that the sprayground at Jefferson Park, 801 N. Mason Ave., is temporarily closed. Work is being done to remove a fire-damaged fieldhouse.

Temperatures this week are going to get toasty. Friday is expected to be mostly sunny with a high of 83 degrees, and Saturday might reach as high as 79 degrees, according to Weather.com.

Following back-to-back arson incidents in 2021, the majority of the fieldhouse at the nearly 15-acre Jefferson Park was demolished, according to Metro Parks. The fires in April and September of that year rendered the structure unusable.

An insurance company shelled out $289,000 to tear down much of the smoke-damaged fieldhouse following an assessment, per Metro Parks.

Jefferson Park’s sprayground will stay closed during the work for public-safety purposes, according to the news release.

It’s believed that the project will take two weeks to finish, although the contractor has until July 12 “in the event of unforeseen issues.”
