At the risk of jinxing it, prepare yourself for a beautiful Independence Day across the South Sound.

The National Weather Service in Seattle is forecasting sun and a high of 80 for Tacoma on the 4th of July. Olympia will be a little warmer at 83, according to NWS meteorologist Matthew Cullen.

If you’re headed to the coast for the holiday, expect highs in the 70s.

Until the 4th

Leading up to the 4th, South Sounders can expect a few light sprinkles as weak storm systems arrive Saturday and again on Monday.

High temperatures should reach into the low 70s into Wednesday just before the big bang of fireworks and sun bring on the heat. Olympia could see close to 80 on Wednesday, Cullen said.

Hot, dry after the 4th

The mercury will keep rising after the 4th, Cullen said.

“For Friday and Saturday, we could actually hit 90, especially away from the water,” he said. Olympia will have a more likelihood of reaching 90 than Tacoma.

“For folks who are more sensitive to heat, either by age or medical conditions ... there could be some concerns as we get into Friday and Saturday,” Cullen said.

Combined with the unsafe use of fireworks, fire danger will increase for smaller fuels like weeds and grasses, which tend to dry out quicker than trees.
