You know what’s returning to South Sound? Rain, forecasters say

Rain is in the forecast for South Sound, arriving late Sunday or early Monday morning, according to the National Weather Service in Seattle.

The Pacific Northwest is plenty familiar with rain, but for the time of year, it is unusual, said Meteorologist Dustin Guy on Sunday.

Over the past 30 years, the last week of July and the first week of August typically are the driest weeks of the year, he said.

And yet we will get a taste of rain, albeit briefly. About one-tenth of an inch (0.1) to one-quarter of an inch (0.25) is expected to fall, Guy said.

That will cool temperatures on Monday, when they will reach only the upper 60s, he said.

Tuesday will be a transition day. It could produce a few lingering showers, then temperatures will begin to climb back into the 80s on Wednesday and slightly higher by the end the week, he said.

Olympia could hit 90 degrees by Friday, Guy said.

The National Weather Service reminds drivers to be careful on wet roads Monday morning.

“Wet roads are likely during the morning commute. Use caution, give space and allow for extra time while driving.”
