Road closures, up to 20K people expected for this Tacoma festival. Here are details
This Saturday marks the ninth annual Hilltop Street Fair in Tacoma. The Aug. 24 event runs from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and boasts a car show, live music and a free outdoor movie showing.
Weekend warriors should note that some streets will be closed while up to 20,000 event-goers head to the fest.
The fair is located around Hilltop’s Business District on Martin Luther King Jr. Way and 11th Street, as well as People’s Park, 900 MLK Jr. Way.
Hillary Brenner with Tacoma Venues & Events told The News Tribune via email that the fest will necessitate in road closures:
South 11th Street from South Sheridan Avenue to west of MLK Jr. Way
South 10th Street from South L Street to west of MLK Jr. Way
South L Street from South 9th Street through South 11th Street
The alley between MLK Jr. Way and South L Street, from South 11th through South 10th streets
MLK Jr. Way between South 9th and South 11th streets is set to be zoned no-parking, she added. Closures will begin at 6 a.m. and last until 9 p.m.
“To note, MLK will be open during the event and the T Line will be operational and is a great opportunity to access the event,” Brenner added.
The Hilltop Business Association is organizing the event, which will offer beer gardens, food trucks, live entertainment, vendor booths and kids’ activities, according to its Facebook event page. The 2024 fair also features a car show, swap meet, one-on-one basketball tournament and free showing of “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” in the park.
Shonta Riles, vice president of Hilltop Business Association, told The News Tribune that organizers expect 15,000-20,000 attendees this year. There will be lots of local artists there as well.
“It’s going to be a grand time, that’s what I would say,” Riles continued. “It’s going to be fun.”
