Pierce County medical examiner identifies Tacoma man killed in Lakewood shootout

A Tacoma man who was killed during a shootout between two vehicles in Lakewood over the weekend has been officially identified.

Jose Lemus Castillo, 33, died Aug. 25 from a gunshot wound to the torso during a shooting near 33rd Avenue South and 82nd Street South. His manner of death was listed as a homicide, according to the Pierce County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Lakewood police officers were dispatched at 7:30 p.m. to multiple reports of shots being fired. Police were told people were exchanging gunfire, and at least one person was struck, according to a department news release.

Three people, including Castillo, were shot and taken to local hospitals. Two people had non-life threatening injuries, the release said. Castillo died after arriving at the hospital, the release said.

While the vehicle associated with the victims remained at the scene, the other vehicle drove away from the area. Police have not identified it, the release said.

No arrests have been made as of Friday. The motive is unknown. The release said that the shooting appeared to be an isolated incident, and there is no imminent danger to the general public.
