Firefighters rescued a Chihuahua from a burning home in East Tacoma on Tuesday.

The blaze in the 1600 block of East 31st Street was reported about 11:30 a.m. and crews could see smoke and flames billowing from the second story of the home when they arrived.

The dog was brought outside safely after firefighters checked the house to make sure no one was inside. The resident was not home at the time of the fire.

Department spokesman Joe Meinecke said crews remained on scene hours later putting out hot spots in the attic.

A cause and estimate of damages was not known.
