Update: T Line reopens in Tacoma after fire nearby disrupted service and car traffic

Update:

The T Line is now running as normal between Old City Hall to St. Joseph, according to a news release from Sound Transit at 2:47 p.m. There might be delays as service recovers.

Initial post:

Tacoma Fire Department firefighters quickly extinguished a kitchen fire today, blocking traffic in the 200 block of South Stadium Way.

The T Line is suspended from Old City Hall to St. Joseph station until further notice, according to a news release from Sound Transit last updated at 1:51 p.m. Trains are still arriving every 12 minutes from Tacoma Dome to Old City Hall, and “passengers are encouraged to seek alternative service options and plan ahead for additional travel time.”

Crews responded at 1:30 p.m. and the fire was out within the next ten minutes, according to Tacoma Fire spokesperson Chelsea Shepherd.

People were evacuating the multi-unit building where the fire broke out as a safety precaution, though it wasn’t a major fire, Shepherd said.

She told The News Tribune at around 1:51 p.m. that trucks and firefighters were packing up and leaving the scene, and traffic shouldn’t be blocked for much longer.
