A Pierce County Jail inmate was found unresponsive in one of the housing units about 9:30 a.m. Sept. 30, according to a news release from the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department.

Corrections deputies performed CPR and administered Narcan to the 35-year-old woman, but she was pronounced dead, according to the release.

Sheriff’s spokesperson Sgt. Darren Moss told The News Tribune via phone that while deputies administered Narcan, they don’t know if the inmate ingested an illicit substance.

Pierce County detectives, forensic investigators and the Medical Examiner’s Office responded to the incident, the release says.

The Sheriff’s Department is waiting for the Medical Examiner’s Office to determine the cause of death, according to Moss. The investigation is ongoing.
