Leaf peepers rejoice: This spectacular South Sound garden is open free for one weekend

There will be a whole lot of color packed into the Rhododendron Species Botanical Garden this fall, and you’ll get a chance to see it for free Oct. 26 and 27.

The 22-acre garden next to the former Weyerhaeuser campus in Federal Way is having its Fall Foliage Festival and Plant Sale that weekend, and the normally $10 adult admission is being waived.

The festival includes garden tours, discounted rare plants grown by the garden, plant vendors and a kid’s scavenger hunt.

The garden’s extensive collection of deciduous azaleas, Japanese maples and other deciduous shrubs and trees provide a concentration of yellow, orange and red.

The garden has one of the largest collections of species rhododendrons in the world but is home to hundreds of other species.
