Tacoma police are investigating a Sunday afternoon sexual assault after an adult woman was attacked from behind while walking though an area park, a spokesman for the department said.

About 2 p.m., police were dispatched to the 6200 block of Wapato Street, which is near Wapato Hills Park, after a report of a woman screaming.

Officers arrived to find the sexual assault victim, who was later taken to an area hospital by Tacoma fire crews.

Detectives and a police dog unit also responded to the scene, but as of about 7 p.m. Sunday, the suspect was still at large, Detective William Muse said.

Police do not have a suspect description because they believe the woman may have been knocked unconscious during the assault, Muse said.

They are not releasing the woman’s age to protect her identity as much as possible, he said.

Anyone with information, including those who may have been in that area between noon and 2 p.m. Sunday, are asked to call the South Sound 911 non-emergency line at 253-287-4455 or Crime Stoppers at 800-222-8477.
