The News Tribune is taking applications for 2025 internships. Here’s what we’re looking for

The News Tribune is looking for its 2025 interns.

We’re searching for reporters who are curious and have a passion for local news.

The pace of our internship program is fast. You’re only here for 12 weeks, and they go by quickly. We assign you stories and also expect you to pitch stories of your own.

Our goal is to have you leave with a robust portfolio of local news clips that demonstrate your range as a journalist, including a larger project of your choosing that you’ll work on throughout the internship. Think of it as a general assignment position.

Mentorship is important to our newsroom. You’ll work closely with editors and fellow reporters to identify and develop skills that are important to launch your journalism career. You’ll also get a peer mentor who will help introduce you to the newsroom and check in with you throughout your internship.

Because of the fast pace of the program, our interns are generally juniors, seniors or college graduates who have prior experience in a newsroom. Often they’ve worked for their college paper, really liked an internship they did with a local newsroom and are looking for their next job in journalism.

In fact, our internship program can be a job tryout. We’ve hired many of our interns later for reporting positions in our newsroom. We also recommend interns who do great work to editors in the other 29 communities across the country that McClatchy (our parent company) covers.

If you’re on the fence about applying, we hope you will. Don’t wait to submit your application. We’re reviewing them on a rolling basis and expect to start interviewing finalists this month.

Our editors value candidates with diverse experiences and ties to Washington state.

Generally our interns join us in the summer, but we can be flexible if a candidate prefers a different time of year. Interns work 40 hours a week and earn $17 an hour.

We prioritize complete applications that include a cover letter, resume and at least three clips of journalistic writing.

Apply at mcclatchy.com/careers.
