This Washington mountain pass is getting hit by snow and winter weather, WSDOT warns

Drivers, take heed: Winter has officially touched down at Snoqualmie Pass on Interstate 90.

On Monday morning, the Washington State Department of Transportation cautioned travelers headed toward the mountain pass. WSDOT posted the note on X (Twitter), along with video taken Sunday of elk plodding across a snowy wildlife bridge.

“The elk ground team reports that winter has arrived at @SnoqualmiePass,” the department wrote. “Whether you’re traveling by hoof or by tire, get in the habit of checking our mountain pass reports before you head out that way: wsdot.com/traffic/passes.”

Snoqualmie Pass is at 3,022 feet, according to WSDOT’s website.

The alert comes as the Pacific Northwest braces for the arrival of a powerful storm system bringing high winds, rain and heavy mountain snowfall.

The transportation department has a social-media account dedicated to Washington passes. That X account, @wsdot_passes, reported snow at Snoqualmie Pass on Monday, with slush and snow on the road.

Drivers who want to stay up to speed on the state’s mountain passes can tune into 530 AM and 1610 AM and download the department’s smartphone app.

WSDOT’s tips for winter travel include checking pass conditions in advance, refraining from using cruise control, driving at slower speeds and ensuring extra space between cars. Learn more by visiting wsdot.com/travel/real-time/mountainpasses/winterdrivingtips.
