Two people were hurt, two cars caught on fire and a Tacoma man is facing a vehicular assault charge for causing all of it, according to the Washington State Patrol.

About 3:10 a.m. Sunday, the 22-year-old, suspected of driving under the influence, was driving south in the carpool lane of the northbound lanes of state Route 167 at South 277th Street in King County.

Two Puyallup drivers, ages 59 and 33, were headed north at the same time, State Patrol says.

Troopers say the Tacoma man first sideswiped the 59-year-old man’s car, then crashed head on into the 33-year-old driver, causing both vehicles to catch on fire.

The Tacoma man and the 33-year-old were injured and taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. The 59-year-old man was not injured, according to the State Patrol.

Troopers say the road was blocked for three hours and 30 minutes.
