Updated: Rally ‘to defeat Trump’s agenda’ held on Inauguration Day in downtown Tacoma

Update: As of about 3 p.m. Monday, about 350 people are protesting peacefully in downtown Tacoma. Traffic is not being impacted.

Initial post: A coalition of over 17 South Sound organizations is planning to protest the incoming president and his administration Monday.

Climate Alliance of the South Sound, La Resistencia, Tacoma Democratic Socialists of America, Tacoma Jewish Voice for Peace, Black Panther Party of WA, All African People’s Revolutionary Party, Capybara Collectiva, International Migrants Alliance, UWT-SDS, North End Tacoma Students for a Democratic Society, MECHA UWT, Kitsap Palestine Solidarity Alliance, Kabataan Alliance and more will rally at Fireman’s Park at 2 p.m., according to a news release.

The 60th Presidential Inauguration is slated to start at noon Eastern Standard Time at the U.S. Capitol.

“We are calling for an end to the attacks on the people, to defeat Trump’s agenda and resist U.S. imperialism,” the release said.

The coalition invites anyone who wants to oppose Donald Trump and his presidency to join the protest.

“Trump’s racist promises to deport law-abiding, tax paying people shouldn’t be ignored. I work in a warehouse with many immigrants and children of immigrants. I don’t want to see my co-workers dragged away and put in cages, that’s why I’ll be marching on Jan 20th,” Talison Crosby of Teamsters Local 174, said in the release.

The release said that the coalition has united around a number of demands, including defending women’s rights, protecting the environment and supporting workers’ ability to unionize and strike.

“During the last Trump presidency he gutted the EPA. Now we’re seeing even more orcas die while climate change driven wildfires threaten lives across California. We have to stand up and fight back now or there will be nothing left to fight for,” Aife Pasquale of Climate Alliance of the South Sound said in the release.
