‘Ongoing challenges’ mean road work will be prolonged on this busy Pierce County street
Sewer work delays on sections of Spanaway Loop Road South have resulted in the road’s closure being extended for the near future due to “several ongoing challenges,” according to an update from Pierce County on Thursday. The road sections were supposed to reopen in January.
A section of the road between Garfield Street South and 116th Street South near Pacific Lutheran University will remain closed, with a detour posted through Tule Lake Road South, State Route 7 and 112th Street South.
“We understand the frustration that this delay causes and thank you for your continued patience as we work to replace aging infrastructure,” the Planning and Public Works department said in an update online. “We will share additional information about the project’s timeline as the team works through these challenges.“
As previously reported by The News Tribune, the Parkland/Brookdale Interceptor Phase 4 project is budgeted for $18.9 million. It is funded by Sewer Utility Construction Funds, which are composed of sewer connection charges and monthly sewer service charges, said Jenny Burger, a public information specialist with the Pierce County Planning and Public Works department.
“Sidewalk work for the repaving project on Spanaway Loop Road South between Garfield Street South and Military Road South began September 3 and was completed on September 27. The roadway grinding and paving portion of the project is on hold through the winter months and will begin early spring 2025. Once the grinding and paving work starts there will be additional travel impacts. We will share more details on those impacts and when to expect them before the project resumes,” the Planning and Public Works department said online.
Road work on Steele Street South between 116th Street South and 109th Street South wrapped up the week of July 8, according to the county.
