A month after the Pierce County Council voted to appoint Bryan Yambe to a vacant seat, efforts are underway to fill the vacancy Yambe left behind on the Fife City Council.

Fife city manager Derek Matheson told The News Tribune on Tuesday the City Council could choose Yambe’s replacement as early as Tuesday night. The meeting will be livestreamed and happen in person at Fife City Hall.

Yambe resigned from his position on Jan. 14, and under state law the city has to fill that vacancy within 90 days, or by April 14, Matheson said. The deadline to apply for the position expired at noon Tuesday. As of that time, the city had received eight applicants, and the City Council was expected to discuss their qualifications during a closed session Tuesday night, Matheson said.

Under state law, the Fife City Council is not required to interview candidates, and Matheson said he could not speak to what qualifications the council is looking for. Candidates must be a registered voter in the jurisdiction at the time of filing and must have resided in the city of Fife for at least a year.

Whoever is chosen will serve in the Position 1 seat until the November election, he said. The person chosen by voters would then serve the remainder of Yambe’s term, until Dec. 31, 2027, Matheson said.

As of Tuesday afternoon the candidates for the position were Marianne Dominique, Michael Sisson, Summer Andriyuk, Nicholas Birge, Mandi Gibson, Fatouma Boulaleh and Tolley Sualoa, Matheson said.

Any final decision about the appointment would be made in public and would require a simple majority vote. With six current members on the council, that means four would have to vote in favor, Matheson said.

The job is classified as part-time, with council members making $1,060.90 a month as of Jan. 1, Matheson said.
