Man killed in head-on wreck in Pierce County during pursuit has been identified
Editor’s note: A previous version of this story mischaracterized the injuries of the passenger riding in the suspect’s car. An update from the Mason County Sheriff’s Office is that she suffered significant injuries and was airlifted to a local hospital.
Investigators have identified a man who died in a head-on wreck on the Key Peninsula Feb. 25 during a chase by Mason County sheriff’s deputies.
The man killed in the wreck near Wright Bliss Road Northwest and 144th Street Northwest was a suspect deputies were chasing in connection to alleged property theft, Mason County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Matt Colbenson told The News Tribune on Feb. 27.
Jeffrey Allyn, 39, of Port Orchard was identified by the Pierce County Medical Examiner in a news release on Feb. 27. His cause of death was multiple blunt force injuries and his manner of death was ruled an accident, the release said.
The News Tribune reported that the crash occurred the afternoon of Feb. 25 on the Key Peninsula after Mason County Sheriff’s Office deputies went to Pierce County to locate a suspect in a stolen property case.
Colbenson confirmed that Allyn was the only person who died in the wreck. He was driving a silver Camry, and had one passenger, Colbenson said.
Asked for an update on the passenger’s status Monday, Colbenson wrote in an email that she suffered “significant injuries and was extricated from the vehicle before being airlifted to Harborview Medical Center for treatment.”
Colbenson told The News Tribune said he believes the person in the car they hit suffered minor injuries, but referred The News Tribune to the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office for more information on the wreck itself, which he said they were investigating. Colbenson said it was a head-on wreck, and that no one else was hurt.
Colbenson said that Mason County Sheriff’s Office detectives located Allyn at a gas station at Wright Bliss Road Northwest and state Route 302. When detectives arrived, Allyn was out of his car, then got back in his car to drive away, hitting the front of one of the detective’s cars as he tried to make a sharp turn, Colbenson said. The damage to the detective’s car wasn’t serious, he said.
Deputies then pursued Allyn on state Route 302 toward Mason County, trying unsuccessfully to stop him with spike strips. Allyn’s Camry hit an uninvolved car after turning onto 144th Street Northwest, Colbenson told The News Tribune.
Asked for more information about the property Allyn allegedly stole, Colbenson said the detectives’ reports aren’t available yet and that he believes their investigation is ongoing.
