122nd Avenue East will be shut down for several hours following a fatal crash in Pierce County’s South Hill area on March 4, 2025, deputies say.

A high-speed crash near South Hill in Pierce County left one person dead Tuesday morning.

Pierce County deputies were dispatched at 7:22 a.m. to 122nd Avenue East and 170th Street East for reports of a gold sedan driving at high speed. Witnesses said the sedan passed a school bus just before the crash, according to the Sheriff’s Office in a Facebook post.

The driver of the gold sedan died at the scene. A woman in the second vehicle was taken to a local hospital with serious injuries, Sheriff’s Office spokesperson deputy Carly Cappetto told The News Tribune.

She said the bus was not hit, and none of the children sustained injuries.

122nd Avenue East was shut down from 160th Street East to 176th Street East as the investigation continued, the post said. Drivers were asked to avoid the area and find alternate routes.
