A fire burned down a home and left one person dead Sunday night in the South Hill area.

Crews were dispatched at 10:34 p.m. to the 8500 block of 121st Street East. First units arrived at 10:40 p.m., according to Central Pierce Fire & Rescue on X.

The post said firefighters began search and fire-suppression efforts. Firefighters got the blaze under control by 11:16 p.m.

“Unfortunately, despite our quick actions, this incident resulted in a fatality,” the post said.

A woman reportedly died at the home, and she was the only person inside, a CPFR spokesperson told The News Tribune via email. She was 80 years old, according to a Pierce County Sheriff’s Office blog post that said Pierce County Sheriff’s Office detectives also responded to the scene.

The home was considered a total loss, the post said. CPFR deputy fire marshals and the Pierce County Fire Marshal’s Office are investigating the cause of the fire.
