29-year-old man injured in car vs. truck crash that slowed I-5 traffic Friday evening

A hit-and-run collision that slowed evening traffic Friday on northbound I-5 sent a 29-year-old man to the hospital, but the driver of the other involved vehicle is still unknown, according to a Washington State Patrol press memo sent Friday night.

The man from Tenino, Washington was transported to Tacoma General Hospital with injuries after an unidentified vehicle, which WSP spokesperson John Dattilo told The News Tribune yesterday was a semi-truck, collided with his gray Audi in lane two of the highway, according to the memo.

The incident happened at milepost 124 in the Lakewood area at 3 p.m., the memo said. The News Tribune reported that it closed three left lanes on northbound I-5 near Berkeley Avenue Southwest.

The state Department of Transportation posted on X in the hours following about the traffic backup that grew from six to 10 miles, from Thorne Lane in Lakewood to the Meridian Road Northeast overpass in Lacey.

Both vehicles were traveling northbound. The gray Audi was traveling in lane three of four when it struck a barrier on the left and was redirected into lane two. That’s where the truck struck the Audi, after the truck moved from lane one to lane two, the press memo said.

The truck left the scene, and the gray Audi “came to rest perpendicular on the left shoulder partially blocking the HOV lane,” according to the memo. The incident blocked the roadway for an hour and 30 minutes.
