A Saturday night fireworks show sprouted over Commencement Bay near Brown’s Point for about 20 minutes, according to the Tacoma Fire Department.

It was a permitted event, said spokeswoman Chelsea Shepherd, who added that the department had known about it since February. However, the fire department typically does not announce fireworks shows, she said.

“It was not tied to a city event,” Shepherd said.

The show started about 9 p.m., she said.

Shepherd checked permit information and it revealed that a Canby, Oregon, business called Western Display Fireworks was hired to stage the show. Canby is about 25 miles south of Portland.

It was not immediately known who hired the business or how much was spent on it, she said.

Tacoma fire crews were on hand Saturday as the mortars and other items were loaded onto a barge to make sure everything was done safely and smoothly, Shepherd said.

The organizers also touched base with the Coast Guard, she said.

This isn’t the first time a private group has paid for their own fireworks display. A similar show took place in the same area in late September last year, The News Tribune reported.
