Update: Power being restored after outage affected 17K customers in/near Tacoma

Thousands of people near Tacoma are without power Wednesday afternoon after a car struck a utility pole.

About 10,542 customers near the Midland and Summit area are affected, according to Tacoma Public Utilities outage map.

TPU is aware of the outage and crews are in the process of working to restore power, according to an X post.

The outage has also affected around 7,400 customers near the Lakewood area, according to Lakeview Light & Power’s map. The company said that power will be restored in about an hour.

“The outage has been traced to a Tacoma Power distribution line serving Lakeview,” the post said.

Franklin Pierce schools posted on Facebook that it is experiencing power, internet and phone issues at schools north of state Route 512. Parents can call 253-281-0516 if they need to get in touch with their child’s school, the post said.

Central Pierce Fire & Rescue crews were dispatched at 1:41 p.m. to the 9200 block of Vickery Avenue East for the crash, department spokesperson Brianna Stenstrom told The News Tribune via email.

“Upon arrival, crews found a single vehicle that had left the roadway and crashed into a power pole. The vehicle was overturned in the ditched and the female occupant needed assistance getting out of the vehicle,” she said.

The driver was taken to a hospital with minor injuries. Stenstrom said she did not have information on what caused the crash.

3:20 p.m. update: Power has been restored in the Lakewood area, according to Lakeview Light & Power.

Around 3,000 customers near Tacoma are still without power, TPU’s outage map shows.

3:40 p.m. update: Power has been restored for all TPU customers except one as crews make final repairs, the company said on X.
