Overnight closures on several Puyallup-area highways this week for construction

Several state highways in Puyallup will have lanes closed on weekday evenings this week, according to the Washington State Department of Transportation.

Crews will be installing signs as part of the state Route 167 Completion Project, which adds “6 new miles of tolled highway between Puyallup and the Port of Tacoma and builds sidewalks and shared-use paths for non-motorized travelers,” per the news release and WSDOT project webpage.

Closures will occur overnight on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

The SR 167 Completion Project is expected to improve the transportation of freight between the Port of Tacoma and manufacturing and industrial areas of Pierce County, reduce congestion on local roads, support job growth from the state’s ports and restore environmental habitat, among other benefits, according to the Washington State Department of Transportation website. It’s projected to be complete in 2030, the website says.

The work this week is part of the project’s third phase of construction, according to WSDOT spokesperson Lizzy Buechel, a member of the project’s communication team. This phase “will widen SR 167 between North Meridian Avenue and SR 410, build a diverging diamond interchange at North Meridian Avenue, build the embankment between the Puyallup Recreation Center and North Meridian Avenue for the next stage and begin construction on the 12-mile spuyaləpabš Trail, previously referred to as the Tacoma to Puyallup Regional Trail,” the WSDOT website says. The road constructed during this phase is scheduled to open in 2027, with lingering work into 2028, according to the website.

Along with a related project to complete state Route 509 in King County, the two projects have obtained $2.69 billion in funding, the WSDOT website says.
