Parks Tacoma officials will keep the playground at Wright Park closed for three more months after an inspection earlier this year revealed rotting support posts at the base of the play structure.

Terry Jungman, Parks Tacoma’s capital improvement program manager, said in a news release that the inspection team was surprised to find the posts were rotting because the rest of the structure was in good condition. Construction on the project will begin this summer and last three months, according to Parks Tacoma.

The playground has been closed since February, and the repairs will cost $150,000, the release states.

The endowment fund from the Tacoma Parks Foundation that built the playground, sprayground and community plaza in Wright Park will cover $100,000, and Parks Tacoma’s park maintenance and operations fund will cover the remaining $50,000.

The funding that facilitated the building of the playground was part of a campaign in 2011 to honor 12-year-old Tacoma resident Zina Linnik, who was abducted in 2007 and killed.
