A person was killed in a traffic collision in Puyallup Wednesday evening that has closed down a major roadway, according to the Fife Police Department.

The crash in the 7900 block of Valley Avenue Northwest, which is close to the border of Fife, involved two vehicles, a passenger car and a pick-up or other larger truck vehicle, Fife Police Chief Pete Fisher told The News Tribune. He said the call came in at 5:18 p.m. Fife police along with officers from several other agencies including the Puyallup Police Department, Bonney Police Department and Lakewood Police Department responded to the scene, he said. The Tacoma Fire Department also responded, according to spokesperson Chelsea Shepherd.

One of the vehicle’s occupants was dead at the scene, and another was transported to a local hospital with what has been reported as non-life-threatening injuries, Fisher said.

Pierce County’s Metro Cities Major Collision Response Team is handling the investigation on-scene, he told The News Tribune at about 6:40 p.m.

“We have the roadway shut down and the investigation will be going on for the foreseeable future,” he said.

Valley Avenue at 70th Avenue East as well as Freeman Road East are closed, according to an X post from Fife Police Department. People are asked to avoid the area and find alternate routes. There isn’t an estimated timeline for Valley Avenue to reopen, the post says.

Fisher added that the police department encourages anyone in the area or any witnesses to contact Fife Police Department with information about the incident. They can call the department’s business line at 253-922-6633 or email their investigations unit at investigations@fifewa.gov, he said.

He said the police department will post on social media when the roadway is clear, but will likely not have additional information at least for the rest of the evening.
