Child found in pond near Puyallup apartments. Firefighters and police on scene
Police and fire personnel in Puyallup were at an apartment building after a child was found in a pond Thursday morning.
Rescue efforts were underway at the Riverside Park Apartments on East Main Avenue after residents found the 3-year-old girl unresponsive, Puyallup Police Department’s Capt. Kevin Gill told The News Tribune.
The child was in critical condition at the hospital, Gill said. The investigation is in the preliminary stage.
While officers were canvassing the area, they found an open patio door and contacted the resident of the unit. The resident was the child’s parent.
Gill said the toddler might have gotten out through a sliding glass door. Police do not know if the door was already open or if she opened it herself.
There was a several minute gap in between when the parent last saw the girl. It is currently unknown how long the child was in the pond.
Access to the apartment complex was partially blocked by police cars and crime-scene tape, he said. The pond was in the common area of the building.
