The Tacoma Police Department will hold its first Diversity Job Fair on Saturday in hopes of attracting recruits of all ethnicities.
Officials ramped up their efforts in 2013 to bring in a wider selection of candidates who better represent the community.
About 65 percent of Tacoma residents are white and 87 percent of the Police Department is white, according to police statistics.
Four percent of the force identifies itself as black, 2 percent as Hispanic, 6 percent as Asian and 0.5 percent as Native American. The other 0.5 percent checked the “other” box.
The job fair will take place from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. at Bethlehem Baptist Church, 4818 E. Portland Ave.
Those attending will be able to try on police uniforms and equipment, practice agility tests, and get information on what is required to apply for the force.
